Monday Morning @ Workforce Performance

This morning listened to another keynote about how we need to let go of what we are currently doing and aim for the best of the best. If you aim for average, you will get average. If you aim at the highest, well you at least get above average. It made me think about our vision statement: Design for Shell produces innovative, flexible and competitivelearner-focused solutions to maximise business impact. We are a team of global practitioners committed to being atthe forefront of corporate learning.

Another quote from this guy I found interest: "People come to a conference and try to grasp everything, but when you get back in the office you are not going to do everything. Just try and get two or three things that you can bring back". Like that.

Talked to another guy who's management just told him to do e-Learning. He is now teaching in classroom and management saw dollars in e-Learning (quick and cheap) and he is now here to learn how to do that... Felt like going back in time...

Also saw a presentation on simulation. Pharmaceutical sales people needed to be trained how to sell medicine to busy docters at hospitals. Reminded me of the UKOU presentation I saw somewhere at the beginning of this year.... Still not sure how we could use simulations like that. I think we need to know more about what is really happening in the field (e.g. oilrigs) to know how we could use this as I am still convinced it is a very powerfull concept if designed properly.

Last presentation of this morning was more on the concepts of gaming. Interesting to see how gaming design looks a lot like learning design. We try to get people's attention. Get them emerged into our learning environment. Give them feedback what they are doing right or wrong. We present them a challenge, a workplace learning assignment, they do it and they get feedback. In gaming feedback is much quicker: you're dead, you lost your sword. Press the replay button. Practice, practice, practice in a safe environment.

I'm up for Tuesday 3.15 - 4:15 local time. Time difference is 9 hrs with Rijswijk.

Yes, I am having a good time. Actually had some beginners luck last night on the roulette table! Won $130!!

Cheers, Rob.
