Moodle plug-ins discovered during NedMoove Meeting
Dear designers,
I attended a meeting of the Dutch Moodle Vereniging (NedMooVe). They invited companies in the Netherlands to present their plug-in solutions for Moodle. I attended 4 presentations. Here are the notes. Next time there is a meeting I will let you all know (they are free for anyone to join).
Flex Page (http://www.brinc-elo.nl)
Flex Page is a course format within Moodle. It looks and feels like a book with previous/next page functionality and functionality at the top and multimedia functionality on each page.
You can create a course in flex page. Basically, with Flex Page you create empty pages. You also define the relationships with pages (e.g. parent - child).
Flex Page looks like the book module in Moodle. Rather than having a block, you now have a whole page to which you can add blocks. This is an initiative of Moodle Rooms and Intel. It is a plug-in for Moodle but not standard.
Webskoel Kem (www.webskoel.nl)
The Webskoel Kem is used for distance learning for students that are unable to come to school. Student logs in to the system and then sees a lesrooster module. This is were the student sees what is his program for today and which teacher he/she has access to with the Webskoel Kem. The student clicks on the teacher name and enters the lesrooster module.
The screen shows webcam streams and a chat box. With a max of six people you can work together. Students can all see each other and chat.
Try the Webskoel Kem on www.webskoel.nl/vo. Here you can see how the webskoel kem is integrated in a Moodle environment.
60 Moodle environments are now using the Webskoel Kem. The webcam runs on flash so you just need the webcam and a browser. You do need to understand Red5, Moodle, Linux, and Flash to properly install and run this tool. If you have this knowledge, this tool is freely available.
Elgg - (http://www.moodle.avetica.nl)
Elgg is an open source social platform. It’s your personal portfolio that exists next to Moodle. Moodle is a course management system. Elgg is a person centered learning environment. In Moodle the course determines the content and sources. In Elgg the individual is determining the content and sources.
Like Moodle Elgg is based on social constructivism. Students can create blogs, others can respond and automatically link to he blog via an RSS feed.
Important Elgg functionality: files and weblog. Integration with Moodle: separate block. From course copy files directly to Elgg. Go to http://www.slideshare.net for presentation.
(LDAP is a database containing users and pass words. Je kan link Moodle and Elgg to the LDAP in order to maintain excess rights via the LDAP. This looks/feels like single sign-on.)
Ephorus plagiarism prevention
Ephorus compares submissions of students with sources such as a database of previous submissions, the Internet (webpages and wikipedia) and third party sources with whom the school has agreed access to the database. It creates a file of findings and sends it to the docent.
In Moodle you create an Ephorus assignment. Student submits as usual. The docent accesses the assignment and sees an extra column indicating the percentage similarities between the assignment and text that Ephorus has compared the submission with.
The student cannot see the score, but maybe that can be developed. The docent will get the report between 3 minutes or a couple of hours.

Barry, thanks, great to hear you were attending this conference. Especially the link to ELGG I found interesting as ELGG is often cited as one of the future applications for learning. Keep the good stuff coming! Seb
