HALO There.

This morning, Dee Parker and I participated in a meeting in the new HALO telepresence suites at Shell. It was a really impressive experience, and made an impact on all participants. If you have a project that would really benefit from a face-to-face meeting, but the budget isn't there for travel, this is a very nice option. However, In Shell, there are only 4 locations: The Hague, Houston, Singapore, and London. If these locations are convenient, I suggest you attempt a meeting this way. To learn more about them, look up "HALO" in the Shell wiki.

HALO there - funny.
I've seen the facilities in The Hague and they sure look good. What's the difference to VC?
The monitors are high definition, so the visual is very very crisp. Also, there is no time lag between the audio and the video - in other words, words spoken are 'in sync' with lips moving. The video is delivered via broadband, and is thus much more reliable than traitional video conferencing.
Also, the setup is automatic - once you are in the room, all you need to do is click on the mouse on the center table in the room to get things started. There is a computer video monitor above the three videopresence screens, and icons show you what to do. The directions are extremely simple and are also posted on a card sitting next to the mouse. We were live in less than 30 seconds!
